Apt and timely

The extensively covered report on credit cards was apt and timely ("The plastic debt trap", Gulf News, February 8).  Earlier, the so-called credit cards were a dream for a lot of people.

Ever since its process has been made easy and is offered with attractive promotions and discounts, credit cards have become easy access for the middleclass.  The widespread use has increased people's spending capacity.

However, potential customers are usually not informed about hidden costs and the method of calculating interests.  If people are fully aware of all applicable charges and process of payments, credit cards will not be a burden. In fact they can be very convenient and beneficial.

More safety on construction sites
It is a major concern whether all construction companies follow the effective site-safety procedures as established by the authorities. Strict adherence to the safety procedures safeguards not only workers but also protects the property being developed to a great extent. It would therefore be appropriate to establish an independent body, endorsed by the authorities, to monitor safety aspects of all construction companies, prior to them being awarded a contract.

An established body like this would ensure safety for everyone at the site. The benefits of this for the management would be reduced complaints from workers and minimised expenses related to injuries and illness, along with better employee morale and productivity.
